Urban Challenge Fund (UCF)
Purpose: The Urban Challenge Fund aims to drive urban development in India, particularly in cities with populations over 10 lakh.
Cabinet Approval: The Union Cabinet has approved the launch of this fund.
Investment: The fund plans to invest ₹4 lakh crore over the next five years, with significant private sector participation. The central government will contribute ₹1 lakh crore.
Funding Mechanisms: Funding will come from government contributions, municipal bonds, bank loans, and Public-Private Partnerships.
Target Cities: It targets cities with populations over 10 lakh, all state and union territory capitals, industrial cities with over 1 lakh population, hilly states (Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim), and North Eastern states.
Objectives: Key objectives include improving urban infrastructure, sanitation, planning reforms, governance, and creating climate-resilient infrastructure.
Relevance: The fund addresses the challenges of rapid urbanization in India, where urban areas contribute 60% of the GDP.
Ministry: The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs will implement the Urban Challenge Fund.
