Daily Current Affairs – Hungary Veto on EU Aid to Ukraine & Druzhba Pipeline Issue | UPSC Prelims Notes
EU–Ukraine Aid Crisis and Russia Oil Pipeline Dispute
Topic Analysis
1. Why Hungary Opposed EU Aid to Ukraine
The European Union planned to give a €90-billion loan to Ukraine for war and economic support. Hungary said it will block this decision.
Why? Because Hungary depends on Russian oil coming through the Druzhba pipeline. Recent damage to pipeline infrastructure affected oil supply. Hungary says energy security is more important for its economy.
This shows an important UPSC concept: countries take foreign policy decisions based on national interest.
2. What is the Druzhba Pipeline
Druzhba means “Friendship pipeline.”
One of the longest oil pipelines in the world (~4000 km).
Built during Soviet Union time.
Carries Russian oil to Europe.
Route:
Russia → Belarus → Ukraine → Poland / Germany → Hungary / Slovakia / Czech Republic.
Many European refineries depend on this oil.
3. Is Ukraine in NATO or EU
Ukraine is not a NATO member. It is only a partner country and has applied for membership.
Ukraine is also not a European Union member. It became an EU candidate country in 2022.
Remember:
NATO membership needs approval of all members.
EU membership also needs approval of all member countries.
4. Why Some EU Countries Still Need Russian Oil
After the Russia–Ukraine war started, the EU imposed sanctions on Russian oil.
But Hungary, Slovakia, and Czech Republic got temporary exemptions because they depend heavily on Russian pipeline oil.
This shows sanctions are difficult when countries depend on energy imports.
5. What is Energy Security
Energy security means continuous and affordable supply of energy.
It is important because oil and gas affect:
Transport
Industry
Inflation
National security
Examples:
Europe using Russian oil, India buying Russian crude, Middle East oil politics.
6. Russia–Ukraine War Background
Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022.
Russia captured Crimea in 2014.
Major conflict area → Donbas region (coal-rich).
Ukraine is important because it is a buffer state between NATO countries and Russia.
